Gary Bettman's Money-Making Tactics Break a Tradition Set in 34 Years Ago
MAY 31, 2023 | BY AUSTIN SABOURIN
Traditionally located on the right shoulder for the past 34 years, the patches have now been shifted to the left side, where team leadership letters are typically found.
This alteration disrupts a long-standing tradition dating back to 1989 and possibly even to the league's formation in 1917. The change, driven by Commissioner Gary Bettman, aims to generate additional revenue through sponsor patches on jerseys.
However, this decision has sparked discontent among traditionalist hockey fans who feel it undermines the sport's history and heritage.
