Marchand leadership burden after Bergeron's departure

SEP 10, 2023   |   BY HUNTER BOWMAN
Brad Marchand and the Boston Bruins face a daunting task following their record-breaking regular season and disappointing playoff exit, especially without Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci.

At the Bruins' first captains' practice, Marchand didn't shy away from recognizing the challenge ahead.

He mentioned,
"To lose them both in the same year, it's a big loss for our group. But it gives other guys the opportunity to step up, start carving a different path for themselves, gaining more leadership, carrying more minutes, carrying more of the load..."

He continued,
"You definitely feel that burden, or responsibility. It comes with the territory with being around for a while. It just kind of how things go, the torch is passed down. When it's time to lead the way, you've got to do it."

Marchand emphasized that leadership goes beyond the captaincy, highlighting the team's history of smooth transitions. Charlie Coyle, likely Marchand's new center, praised Marchand's work ethic, noting his leadership qualities.

Many expect Marchand, at 35, to become the new captain, a remarkable journey for a player known for some wild antics on the ice.

While leadership matters, success ultimately hinges on talent and luck. Despite his age, Bergeron was vital to the Bruins' success, improving their defense and adding offensive firepower.

Bergeron's impact extended to the offensive zone, scoring 27 goals and 58 points in 78 games.

Marchand talked about replacing Bergeron and Krejci's production and leadership with a team effort. The loss of key players like Tyler Bertuzzi and Taylor Hall could have ripple effects, potentially affecting players like Jake DeBrusk and even David Pastrnak.

Even without major losses, the Bruins faced a tough task after their historic season. With Bergeron and Krejci gone, Marchand and the Bruins carry a heavy burden into the upcoming season.
