Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney has expressed a strong desire to secure 26-year-old winger Jake DeBrusk's future with the team by avoiding his potential unrestricted free agency next July and working on a contract extension.

"We'd like to know if Jake indeed does want to be here," Sweeney stated during a media gathering at Warrior Arena. "Hopefully, we can find common ground. We'd like to see Jake remain with the Boston Bruins."

Despite Sweeney's remarks, it appears that DeBrusk's commitment to the Bruins is crystal clear. On two occasions this offseason, DeBrusk has openly expressed his desire to continue with the team, emphasizing his deep connection with the organization.

"I'm hoping to stay (with the Boston Bruins)," DeBrusk mentioned last month. "It's the only team that I know and the team that I grew up with. Hopefully, it goes in that direction, and we'll see how it goes."

Just last week, DeBrusk further reinforced his dedication to the team and hinted at the potential contract negotiations.

"I'm approaching it just getting ready for game 1," DeBrusk told reporters at the team's golf tournament. "Getting my game ready, and I guess when it comes to contract talks, it's one of those things where you need two sides to tango, and if it happens, it happens."

DeBrusk's journey over the past two years has been marked by ups and downs, including a trade request in November 2021, followed by a two-year contract extension signed at the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline, and a standout season last year. He scored an impressive 27 goals and contributed 23 assists in 64 games during the previous season, earning recognition for his resilience and determination.

Sweeney praised DeBrusk's growth as both a player and a person, highlighting his ability to set aside past challenges and perform at a high level. With a new season on the horizon, DeBrusk's role is expected to be crucial, and his commitment to the team's success remains unwavering.
