Don Sweeney isn't wasting time strengthening defensive depth

Boston Bruins' GM Don Sweeney wasted no time in strengthening the team's defensive depth by acquiring a trio of right-shot defensemen in recent trades.

Initially seen as a cap-clearing move, the acquisitions of Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula from the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as Reilly Walsh from the New Jersey Devils, have provided the Bruins with added options on the blue line.

Sweeney expressed his optimism about the new additions during a media availability, highlighting their previous NHL experience and diverse skill sets.

Mitchell, a 24-year-old defenseman, brings solid experience from his time with the Blackhawks, while the 22-year-old Regula has shown promise in his limited NHL appearances.


Walsh, a talented offensive player, impressed Sweeney with his skill set and has the potential to contribute significantly.

Regarding the team's other defensive options, Sweeney admitted it was unlikely they would re-sign Dmitry Orlov, a veteran defenseman acquired before the trade deadline last season.

The Bruins are now looking to ramp up the internal competition on the right side of their defensive lineup with the arrival of Mitchell, Regula, and Walsh.

Overall, these trades have added depth and competition to the Bruins' defensive corps, providing the team with more options as they prepare for the upcoming season.
