Boston Bruins rookie center Matthew Poitras seems to have encountered a challenging phase, contributing only one assist in his last six games, with a goal and two assists in his last ten.

During the pre-game media session, approximately two hours before facing off against the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Florida, Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery faced a question from Boston Globe reporter Jim McBride.

McBride inquired if there's anything the coaching staff can do to reignite the 19-year-old rookie.

«You can put him in situations that are favorable, like offensive zone starts, but he's gotta kickstart himself,» Montgomery replied.

Montgomery's response marked the first instance of him openly urging Poitras since the rookie's impressive debut in training camp, securing a spot on the 2023-24 Boston Bruins roster.

Initially, there seemed little to challenge, as Poitras excelled in his nine-game regular-season tryout, drawing comparisons to the recently retired former Bruins captain and future hall-of-famer Patrice Bergeron.

Poitras showcased his prowess with three goals and two assists in his initial nine games, prompting his coach to praise his two-way, mature, and gritty playing style.

On Halloween, Montgomery expressed confidence in Poitras, emphasizing his progression and contribution to winning hockey games.

Despite being cautious due to his age, Montgomery outlined the reasons for Poitras' continued presence on the team, highlighting his hockey IQ, skill, vision, and notably, his competitive spirit.

While Poitras' offensive performance has taken a dip, Montgomery continues efforts to support and position him favorably.

However, it appears the reigning Jack Adams Award winner may have adopted a different strategy, employing a touch of tough love on Poitras, who was once again slated to skate between Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk on Wednesday night.
