Jake DeBrusk is coming off his best season yet, evolving into an impact player for the Boston Bruins. Despite missing six weeks due to injury, he was on pace for 35 goals in the 2022-23 season. Over his last 82 regular-season games, he's scored 37 goals and 66 points, establishing himself as a key player.

Now, with changes in the Bruins' forward roster, DeBrusk needs to step up even more. Head coach Jim Montgomery expects him to be a driving force, not just a complement. DeBrusk's speed and scoring ability make him valuable, both on offense and penalty kills.

«Him and I have spoken a lot about that. He was really good for us for 90 percent of the games. With [Patrice] Bergeron, I could rely on 100 percent of the games. There's 10 percent that needs to be made up and he's got to carry a little bit of that weight. Not only him but a lot of others, but I think mentally he wants that and he's ready for it.»

Montgomery's emphasis on DeBrusk's role puts him in the hot seat. If he doesn't contribute as expected, there's a possibility he could be moved at the trade deadline for a player who could be a significant asset for the Bruins in the future.

DeBrusk agrees with the need to utilize his speed consistently. With Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci gone, Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha will be the new top-six centers. DeBrusk's presence on the wing could make their transition smoother.

«I agree with Monty. As the year went on, I felt that there were certain times where I was more confident or comfortable in doing those things and the only way you can get better as if you keep trying. You're gonna fail sometimes, but it's one of those things that when I'm playing well, it's what I just do naturally.»

Last season, DeBrusk also improved his two-way play, and the upcoming season is crucial, especially with contract talks looming. However, he's more focused on helping the team succeed and is eager to get the season started.
