The future of the Boston Bruins at the moment is the most uncertain it has ever been, but a recent reported confirmed the Bruins may be signing one of their newly acquired defenseman.
The NHL trade deadline saw the Boston Bruins move on from a bunch of players, and are projected to have just over $66 million in contracts heading into the offseason with a bunch of big decisions to make.
With that, the Boston Bruins are without their top-four right-shot defenseman, and that is where Jokiharju comes into play.
Jokiharju deserving of a contract extension
Boston acquired Jokiharju and a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, but that doesn't mean he can't leave in the offseason and sign elsewhere. According to The Hockey News, they believe the Boston Bruins should sign Jokiharju to a contract extension.
Interim head coach Joe Sacco even had some high praise when talking about the newly acquired defenseman.
«What's stood out I think is the ability to help us come out of our zone, exit out of our zone cleaner. He has the ability to make some good first passes on our breakouts or coming out of our D-zone coverage.
That's something that can help our group and alleviate some of the pressure when we're in our defensive zone. I think his play at the offensive blue line has been good. When we go low to high and we're trying to get the puckwhatever the d-man's trying to execute at that particular time, he's been pretty good there so far.»
Jokiharju is just about to enter the prime of his career, and after being a first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, he has found some instant chemistry with defenseman Nikita Zadorov, and Jokiharju has been impressed with how well they have connected as well.
«We can keep the game simple,» said Jokiharju. «He's a great defenseman in this league, for sure. Every team wants a player like him on their team, so it's just really nice to play with him.»
No contract extension talks have begun yet, but Jokiharju made it clear that he is open to discussing a contract extension before hitting free agency on July 1st.
«100% I'll be willing to talk, for sure,» Jokiharju said.
