News travels fast in December, especially when it involves a veteran defenseman suddenly hitting the market for free.

That is exactly the situation today, as the Pittsburgh Penguins placed Matt Dumba on waivers, opening the door for the Boston Bruins to consider a no-cost addition.
The move came hours after Pittsburgh completed its blockbuster trade with the Edmonton Oilers for Tristan Jarry.
To clear roster space, the Penguins waived Dumba, a 31 year old right shot who has spent this season trying to regain the heavy, physical style that once made him a feared presence in Minnesota.
Boston, meanwhile, is dealing with its own problems on the blue line. Jonathan Aspirot exited Thursday's game with an upper body injury, joining a list of banged up defenders that has already pushed minutes higher for the entire top four.
The Bruins added Charlie McAvoy back into the lineup only a day ago, but the depth chart still feels thinner than the coaching staff prefers.

Matt Dumba made available for free

Dumba's availability comes at the right moment for Boston. His game still features punishing hits, net front intensity, and a willingness to handle tough defensive assignments.
Those traits mirror the Bruins identity, and even with inconsistency in recent seasons, his style aligns with what Boston values.
Claiming Dumba would also cost nothing but cap space, a factor that will force general manager Don Sweeney to think carefully. Boston's flexibility is limited, but replacing a missing depth piece without sacrificing assets has real appeal during a stretch when injuries keep surfacing.
If Boston wants another right shot who brings edge and experience, this may be the cleanest path. If not, the Bruins risk watching a playoff rival scoop him instead.
Either way, Dumba's placement on waivers officially puts a new option on Sweeney's desk at exactly the moment the Bruins could use one.
