An insider may have just revealed Jeremy Swayman's next contract
CapFriendly may have done us a solid in its window of closing, as we got a look at what the Boston Bruins could end up paying Jeremy Swayman for his next contract.
You have to look for comparables when it comes to NHL contracts sometimes, to get an idea of what they will get paid for the value provided to his team.
As the Bruins's #1 goalie, we can set a standard as that gives us players like Juuse Saros, Connor Hellebuyck, Ilya Sorokin, and Andrei Vasilievskyi.
3 out of 4 of these players are some of the highest-paid Goaltenders in the NHL of which Swayman could slot in right behind Ilya Sorokin, should he find the term he wants.
However according to Evolving Hockey, if the Bruins play hardball, his Project Contract could end up around $6.25 Million AAV.
But the variance could be accounted for in multiple ways Via The Athletic's Fluto Shinzawa:
General manager Don Sweeney has repeatedly declared that locking up the 25-year-old is a priority. That has yet to produce an agreement.
That's because the variance in Swayman's perceived value is as wide as the goalie's ceiling is tall.
Consider the following data points:
$5 million, Thatcher Demko's average annual value on a five-year contract signed March 31, 2021, per CapFriendly.
$6.253 million, Swayman's average annual value on a four-year contract projected by Evolving Hockey.
$7.5 million, Swayman's AAV on an eight-year contract projected by an agent granted anonymity to discuss a player he does not represent.
$7.74 million, Juuse Saros' AAV on an eight-year contract signed July 1.
$9.5 million, Andrei Vasilevskiy's AAV on an eight-year contract signed July 29, 2019.
$11 million, Swayman's AAV on an eight-year contract projected by The Athletic's Dom Luszczyszyn. There's been no official term or money set, due to the high upside of Swayman's play, and the fact that it is known Sway wants term and more money as the Bruins #1 goalie.
All in all, this will likely be a play-it by ear situation with the team.
