Following the game, Sturm met with the media and offered a comment that, while mild on the surface, could draw league attention.

«Players have off nights. I think referees have some off nights too,»
Sturm said when discussing the flow of the game and how it was officiated.
It was not a rant. It was not profanity-laced. But in the NHL, even subtle public criticism of officials can raise eyebrows.
The league has a long history of protecting its referees, and coaches are well aware that calling out officiating, even in passing, can sometimes lead to fines.
Sturm's remark came across as measured and human, more observation than accusation, yet it still crossed into territory the league typically prefers coaches avoid.
Given that this was Sturm's first season behind the Bruins bench, the comment stood out more than it might have coming from a veteran coach known for pushing boundaries.

Marco Sturm could face a fine from the league

Players are allowed to struggle. Coaches are allowed to struggle. Acknowledging that officials are human too did not feel outrageous.
But the NHL has fined coaches in the past for less direct statements, especially when comments can be interpreted as questioning the integrity or consistency of officiating.
That is where the risk lies. Chances are, nothing will come of this. Sturm did not name specific calls, did not single out referees, and did not accuse bias.
Still, the league has occasionally issued fines simply to reinforce precedent, not necessarily because a comment was extreme. For Sturm, this is a learning moment more than anything else.
As a new head coach, he is still adjusting to the fine line between honesty and league protocol. Bruins fans may appreciate the transparency, but the NHL tends to prefer silence.
If a fine does come, it would likely be small and symbolic. If nothing happens, it will quietly fade away.
