Completed trade between the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers: Don Sweeney is a genius

The Boston Bruins decided to ship off Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers last season and it's now being deemed as a steal of a trade, favoring general manager Don Sweeney.
The Bruins shipped Trent Frederic to Edmonton in a three-team trade, involving the New Jersey Devils.
Frederic was originally traded to the New Jersey Devils for unsigned forward Petr Hauser and 50 percent of his contract retained, than in the same move, the Bruins fan favorite was shipped off to Edmonton.
Frederic certainly has mixed emotions before leaving the city of Boston, who loved the young forward's Boston-like hockey style of play.
«I had a lot of mixed emotions (on the trade), I had a feeling, I could see the writing on the wall,» Frederic said. «I had mixed emotions about leaving Boston but excited about coming to Edmonton, and I think this team and this group has a good chance of taking a run at it.»
Bruins deemed clear winners in Trent Frederic trade
Fast forwarding to the start of the 2025-26 NHL season, Frederic signed a $30.8M deal for eight years and was originally placed on a line alongside Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid.
Sounds like a recipe for success, right?
Frederic failed to produce alongside two of the games' highest-scoring forwards and was quickly demoted.
Since, things have gone terribly.
Throughout his first 17 games this season, he's tallied just one goal and had a plus/minus of -1.
He has yet to record a point in 14 straight games for Edmonton, and the $8M+ contract is currently looking like a huge upset.
Time will tell if the former Bruins' 29th overall pick can flourish with Edmonton.
But as of now, it's a huge win for the Bruins.
