At last year's NHL trade deadline, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney made a bold and controversial decision. He sent longtime center Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche, a move that signaled change rather than comfort.

In return, Boston acquired Casey Mittelstadt and prospect Will Zellers, along with additional assets. At the time, the focus was split, with Mittelstadt viewed as the immediate NHL piece and Zellers labeled as a longer-term project.
Fast forward to today, and Zellers made it clear why Sweeney targeted him. In Team USA's opening World Juniors game against Germany, Zellers delivered a breakout performance.
The 19-year-old forward scored two goals and added an assist for three points in USA's 6-3 win.
He finished plus three and did it despite starting the game on the fourth line.

Will Zellers proves Bruins traded for goals

From a Bruins fan perspective, this is exactly what the organization hoped to see. Zellers did not just score, he scored like a scorer, quick release, smart positioning, and confidence without hesitation.
The numbers back it up. Two goals, one assist, three points, and a noticeable impact every time he touched the puck. Against international competition, that matters.
Zellers has built this reputation all season. Playing for the University of North Dakota, he entered the tournament with 10 goals and 15 points, consistently showing a nose for the net.
Don Sweeney has taken criticism over recent seasons for asset management. This trade may end up aging well, especially if Zellers continues trending as a legitimate finisher. Pure goal scorers are hard to find.
Charlie Coyle was a valuable Bruin, but Boston needed offense in the pipeline. Zellers represents that shift, youth, upside, and scoring instinct.
The World Juniors are not the NHL, but they reveal habits. Zellers' habit is finishing chances. That translates.
