The OHL announced Branch has passed away, saying the longtime commissioner died Sunday at the age of 77. The news travelled fast through every rink that ever called itself an OHL barn.

Branch's run was almost impossible to picture ending, because it lasted from 1979 until his retirement in 2024. He also led the Canadian Hockey League as president from 1996 to 2019, shaping major junior hockey across the country.
If you grew up on this league, you saw his fingerprints everywhere, expansion, better arenas, sharper marketing, and stricter standards. The OHL itself called his tenure an era of «unprecedented growth and progress,» and that feels right.
What matters most, though, is the player-first stuff that outlives standings. The OHL credited Branch with championing safety, mental health support, and education, plus building the OHL Scholarship Program into a true promise.
That scholarship line is not just a slogan, either. The league says 329 graduates received OHL scholarships in 2024-25, and member teams have invested more than $42 million over the past 15 years.
Hockey Canada honored Branch with the Order of Hockey in Canada back in 2016, and he also served on the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee. For Bruins fans, it's a reminder that a lot of Boston careers started in his system.

Current commissioner Bryan Crawford called it a sad day and said Branch always prioritized players and their experience. That quote hits because it's exactly how most people describe him, steady, stubborn, and protective.
CHL president Dan MacKenzie went even bigger, saying the game is safer, faster, and more skilled because of Branch's influence. That's a builder's legacy, not a headline, and it's why so many are grieving.
The OHL also shared condolences to his partner Patsy and his family, with memorial details to come. The next milestone is simple, honor him well, then keep his player-first standard alive in every junior room.
