A year ago at the deadline, Sweeney finally played seller, and moving Charlie Coyle was the kind of shakeup that can get a GM booed for months.

The return mattered, Boston landed Casey Mittelstadt, prospect Will Zellers, and a valuable draft pick.
Then June brought the other pillar, with Boston using the seventh overall pick to draft James Hagens. That selection was a loud statement that the Bruins were serious about refilling the pipeline, not just patching holes.

Don Sweeney turns World Juniors into hope

As a Bruins fan, seeing the kids pop like that makes last year's anger feel a lot less permanent.
At the 2026 World Juniors, both Hagens and Zellers wore Team USA colors, and they did not just blend in. Zellers opened the tournament with two goals and an assist versus Germany, then added key winners against Switzerland and Slovakia, including his third game-winner of the event.
Hagens had his own signature night against Slovakia, scoring twice in a wild 6-5 comeback win. Those are the games that make a prospect feel like more than a name on a depth chart.
Of course, the tournament ended in heartbreak, with Finland knocking the U.S. out 4-3 in overtime. That loss still does not erase what Bruins fans saw, Boston finally has top-end youth producing on a big stage.
This is where the «saved his job» talk comes from. Nobody can honestly guarantee what ownership thinks, but Sweeney badly needed visible proof that last year's sell-off had a point, and World Juniors gave him that.
The Zellers piece is especially underrated because it came inside a trade most people framed around Mittelstadt. If Zellers keeps tracking as a pure finisher, the Coyle deal looks less like surrender and more like a turning page.
