Trent Frederic and the Edmonton Oilers are in a rough spot, and Boston Bruins fans are noticing again.

On Tuesday, Edmonton confirmed they will healthy scratch Frederic, with Andrew Mangiapane also sitting. That's a loud message from a team built to contend, and it lands hard on a former Bruin who used to be a nightly fixture.
Frederic's production has cratered into uncomfortable territory. He has two goals and one assist in 41 games, and he's averaging just over ten minutes at five on five.
The money makes it sting more. Frederic is in year one of an eight-year deal with a $3.85 million cap hit, and it was supposed to lock in a nasty, playoff-ready middle-six piece for Edmonton.

Trent Frederic healthy scratch adds Oilers pressure

If you watched him in Boston, this is the part that feels wrong, because Frederic usually plays his best when the temperature rises.
Back with the Bruins, he wasn't a pure scorer, but he had real punch and pride in his shifts. He was a 2016 first-round pick, 29th overall, and he even popped for a 40-point season in 2023-24, which is why this slide looks so jarring.
The Oilers did not acquire him for quiet nights. They brought him in through a three-team deadline deal with Boston and New Jersey, chasing a heavier identity for the spring, and now they're stuck searching for a reset in January.
For Boston, it's another reminder that «Bruins type» players don't always travel cleanly. Systems change, linemates change, confidence changes, and a healthy scratch is the league's bluntest punctuation.
Frederic has to respond the only way he knows, with honest, chaotic shifts that force his way back into the lineup.
