Recent injury news could result in the Boston Bruins making an official goaltending move
Michael DiPietro's progress and Joonas Korpisalo's struggles have Boston Bruins fans staring at the crease again.
The Bruins are stumbling into a brutal stretch, and the backup goalie spot has become a nightly stress test. When the team is leaking goals and confidence, every save feels like it weighs double.
Korpisalo's season line tells the story, a 3.60 goals against average and an .882 save percentage through the season so far. Those are tough numbers to carry while the Bruins chase their way out of a slump.
That is why Friday's Providence update hit so loudly. Mark Divver reported that Michael DiPietro was back taking shots at practice after his injury, which at least hints he is moving toward a return.
If DiPietro gets cleared and is ready for game action, Boston suddenly has a real option sitting in the system. The Bruins could reward that progress with an NHL look, and Korpisalo's roster spot becomes the uncomfortable question.
Joonas Korpisalo could be running out of time
DiPietro has been excellent in Providence when healthy, posting a 1.97 goals against average and a .933 save percentage in 15 AHL starts earlier this season. If you want to talk merit, those numbers scream for an opportunity.
That does not mean Boston has to rush anything.
But the bigger point is simple. The Bruins have goaltending depth for a reason, and at some stage you have to use it, even if the transaction mechanics get messy.
If DiPietro is ready, the Bruins can create internal competition, simplify the crease conversation, and give the room a different energy. Right now, they need something that changes the feeling of a game before it slips away.
