For months, Bruins fans have debated why Boston ultimately decided to trade away former captain Brad Marchand, a franchise-defining player whose departure still feels strange.

Offensively, there has been no drop-off for Marchand in Florida. In fact, his production has remained elite, reminding everyone that his skill and hockey sense are still very much intact.
But a recent social media post may have revealed the other side of the equation, and it is not flattering.
According to shared analytics, Marchand has been among the league's best offensive forwards this season while simultaneously grading out at the very bottom defensively.
That contrast is jarring. Dominant offense paired with near nonexistent defensive impact is not something the Bruins typically tolerate, especially from a top-line veteran.
The post suggests that Marchand has ranked in the highest offensive percentile while sitting in the lowest defensive percentile for an extended stretch.

Brad Marchand defense decline may explain Bruins decision

Marchand was traded to the Florida Panthers last trade deadline and will always be a Bruins legend, but the organization has built its identity on two-way responsibility, structure, and accountability.
If Marchand's defensive game truly slipped this far, it helps explain why Don Sweeney chose to move on, even at the risk of backlash.
The Bruins today look noticeably younger, faster, and more balanced across all four lines.
Boston currently sits in a strong position in the standings, outperforming preseason expectations and playing a more collective brand of hockey.
That does not mean Marchand was a problem. It means the fit may no longer have been right.
This does not diminish what Marchand gave the Bruins, nor does it erase his legacy.
Sometimes tough decisions are made not because a player cannot score anymore, but because everything else begins to slip.
For the Bruins, moving on from Marchand may have been less about offense and more about identity.
