Bad news landed for the Boston Bruins and Matej Blumel on Wednesday. Early in the first period against the New York Islanders, Blumel suffered a lower-body injury and did not return.

Today the club confirmed they have placed him on long-term injured reserve (LTIR).
Blumel, 25, had only recently earned another look with Boston. He signed a one-year, $875,000 one-way deal in July, and after dominating in the AHL last season, the Bruins recalled him earlier this month.
He had appeared in four NHL games this year, though he remained pointless.

Matej Blumel expected to miss a good amount of time

Heading to LTIR means Blumel will miss a good amount of time.
For a player clawing his way onto the roster, the timing could not be worse.
The Bruins already had several forwards and defensemen sidelined, and adding Blumel to the LTIR makes the matter worse.
Boston still has some good options to replace him, and right now Georgii Merkulov is getting a shot, as he was just recalled today.
This also stalls what might have been Blumel's chance to make a stronger impression. After tallying 39 goals and 72 points in 67 games at the AHL level in 2024-25, every shift with Boston was a chance to prove himself.
Now he is going to have to wait some time to get another chance.
Blumel has not been the most impressive so far during his four games with the Bruins this season.
It will be interesting to see if he gets another chance with the big club whenever he comes back from injury or if he will go back to the AHL.
