The Boston Bruins swiftly fired Jack Adams winning coach, Jim Montgomery. He would later resurface in St. Louis, as the Blues hired him without hesitation. He'd only sit without work for five days at the most.

Well, there's troubling news in St. Louis arising, thanks to Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic.

The St. Louis Blues are currently 5th in the Central Division, with an 11-12-1 record. They could end up missing the playoffs, even with Montgomery behind the bench.

According to the New York Times back in October, they had a 1 in 10 shot of making the playoffs.

Going into 2024-25, the model is doubling down on the Blues not having much of a playoff shot. Their projection lands right around 82 points, with a 1-in-10 chance of making the postseason

If Montgomery can't find a way into the playoffs by March, we have to assume that they will end up making moves by the deadline.

However, Rutherford explained on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio that Armstrong is pragmatic and will prioritize long-term planning if the team's performance falters.

«If the Blues don't look like they're that playoff team he hopes, I think he's going to have to sell off whatever players can draw some interest,» Rutherford said.

With the Blues being pressed up to the salary cap, they'll have to think pragmatically, if they're to build a winning team.

The team could end up moving veterans like Nick Leddy, or Brandon Saad in order to optimize cap space for trades down the road.

There's talk of a re-tool should the team fail to live up to expectations.

Rutherford noted the urgency of the Blues' situation, noting, «They're spending a lot of money not to make the playoffs,» and suggested that failing to contend by early January could prompt a shift toward selling assets.

While Montgomery has been a positive force behind the bench for the St. Louis Blues, if they don't look like a postseason contender by January, a re-tool is in order.

They'll need to utilize their depth available in order to gain assets for a better roster.

The team is 5th in the Central Division and in 2019 rose from the ranks in January to later lift a cup in the post-season.
