The relationship between Kyle Dubas and Auston Matthews, both on and off the ice, has been a positive one. However, recent developments have raised concerns about the legality of their connection. The NHL Players' Association (NHLPA) has initiated an investigation into Dubas, suspecting potential ulterior motives in his dealings with Matthews. If found guilty, Dubas could face severe consequences, including being blacklisted from the NHL and potential legal repercussions.

The NHLPA is scrutinizing Dubas due to the fact that both he and Matthews have agents who are affiliated with the same firm. The association's certified agent regulations explicitly prohibit agents from representing NHL club officers or employees. Although Matthews' agent, Judd Moldaver, is not subject to NHLPA discipline as he primarily represents golfers, the issue at hand raises significant concerns.

Multiple NHL certified agents at rival agencies say the issue is cut and dried.

«This is clearly prohibited under the regulations,» one long-time agent said on Thursday, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of his firm. «It is an unwritten, understood and longstanding practice that your guy down the hall doesn't work for the other side. I'd like the NHLPA to launch an investigation and draw their own conclusion.»

This situation is likely to result in lawsuits, terminations, and potential legal actions if Dubas is found guilty. However, it is important to consider Dubas' defense as well. His agent, Chris Armstrong, works in a distinct department from Moldaver, despite both being employed by Wasserman. Furthermore, Dubas hired Armstrong based on their long-standing friendship. While it is improbable that any violations occurred, we cannot dismiss the possibility entirely.

The NHLPA will conduct a thorough investigation to determine whether Dubas had alternative motives in his dealings with Matthews during their time in Toronto. While it is crucial to let the investigation proceed, it remains to be seen whether Dubas can establish a strong case for his innocence.
