Following the Toronto Maple Leafs' first-round playoff exit, trade rumors have surged, particularly involving key forwards from the team's "Core Four."
Notably, speculation has extended to captain John Tavares, with pundit Ben Mathewson suggesting a potential offseason trade to the Buffalo Sabres.
I'm having thoughts about a Tavares trade to Buffalo this summer.
Mathewson cited Tavares' family ties to Buffalo, the ease of relocation for his family, and his fit as a third center on a rebuilding Sabres team that could absorb his $11 million salary.
Despite facing backlash for his views, Mathewson pointed out that while it's unlikely Tavares would waive his no-move clause, Buffalo could be a consideration.
During his season-ending media session, Tavares expressed his desire to stay with the Maple Leafs, saying,
"I haven't put much thought into it, but I love to play here."
Ultimately I think it's very unlikely Tavares waives his NMC, but I do think Buffalo is uniquely positioned to be one of the few teams he'd consider waiving for.
He also noted that General Manager Brad Treliving had urged the team to focus on improvement, subtly hinting at potential roster changes.
