15+ Year Veteran Shocks The NHL After Signing A Contract
Wayne Simmonds, known as one of the top power forwards in the last two decades, brought a mix of strength and skill to the ice, making a lasting impact on the game. However, injuries affected the latter part of his career after his 1000th game.
On April 8th, 2023, Simmonds said goodbye to the rink, wearing the Toronto Maple Leafs jersey against the Montreal Canadiens. But today brings a significant announcement as Simmonds announces his final NHL contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, retiring with the team.
It's hard to describe my emotions on a day like this, but one of my very first thoughts as I look back is my life in Philadelphia and playing for the Flyers. Taking the ice in a Flyers sweater is a special feeling and it's one that I'm truly proud of. The history of this franchise and standard of being a Flyer that was set is unique and one that I hold in the highest regard. Perhaps the biggest reason for that is the way the fans embrace this team. It was a thrill to play for you all these years, and you mean so much to me. I'd like to thank Dan Hilferty, Keith Jones and Danny Briere for making this a special day and the fans for all their support throughout the years for me and my family.
Reflecting on his journey, Simmonds shares heartfelt thanks to the Flyers and their passionate fans. His career spanned 1037 games with 263 goals and 263 assists, playing for Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Nashville, New Jersey, Buffalo, and Toronto.
