Could the Bruins Push to Acquire Mark Scheifele in the Next Few Weeks?

SEP 4, 2023   |   BY DYLAN ROBILLARD
The Boston Bruins might add another center to their depth chart, and Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press speculates whether Mark Scheifele will be the target.

The Bruins have been keeping an eye on Mark Scheifele all offseason, and things have heated up. Due to the departure of Patrice Bergeron and David Krej, two crucial centers for the Bruins, space is available for a valuable center. Will Bruins general manager Don Sweeney become more assertive and approach Kevin Cheveldayoff, his Winnipeg counterpart, with a tempting proposition in the upcoming weeks? was an additional question posed by Mike McIntyre.

It is a complex scenario, according to McIntyre. He says that there is growing consensus that Scheifele would benefit most from a change of scenery. But trying to move him would involve a lot of moving parts. Since running Montreal's Jake Evans, he has not appeared to be the same player.

McIntyre also made a point that if the Jets have a successful season, the implications of trading become rather difficult. He says:

"What happens if Winnipeg is in a playoff spot, or at least fighting for one? Would Cheveldayoff really move two of his most valuable players in that situation, effectively waving the white flag? It would be quite the message sent, not only to a fanbase the organization has been trying to re-connect with this summer — in the form of an aggressive marketing and ticketing campaign — but also to the remaining players on the roster."
