Former Boston Bruins Player Set To Have Jersey Retired

Big Joe Thornton, the former Bruin, is set to receive a monumental honor from the San Jose Sharks as they officially retire his number 19 next season.

Thornton, who spent seven seasons with the Bruins, made a significant career move during the 2005-2006 season, expressing dissatisfaction with the direction of the Boston franchise and requesting a trade.

The ensuing trade to San Jose proved historic, as Thornton's prolific performance earned him the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Art Ross Award in his first season with the Sharks.

After a remarkable 14 seasons in San Jose and brief stints with Toronto and Florida, Thornton retired following the 2021-2022 season.



Throughout his illustrious career spanning 1,714 games, Thornton amassed 430 goals, 1,109 assists, and a total of 1,539 points with a career +182 rating. Known for his iconic beard, the formidable forward earned the nickname Big Joe for his imposing size, resilience on the puck, and willingness to engage physically with opponents. In the playoffs, Thornton continued to shine, contributing 134 points in 184 games.

Joining Patrick Marleau, Thornton becomes the second San Jose Shark to have his number retired. Congratulations to Big Joe Thornton on this well-deserved accolade!
