Bobby Orr is widely regarded as the best defender to ever play in the NHL, and fellow legend Wayne Gretzky knows how the league should honor the iconic Bruin.

A Bobby Orr Trophy?

Last week on the NHL on TNT panel, Gretzky shared how Orr, along with Gordie Howe, deserve to have trophies in their names, making an extra strong case for having two defenseman awards:

''We need a Bobby Orr Trophy, for the most points by a defenseman, and then (a trophy) for the best defensive defenseman. Have two awards. You should honor Bobby Orr, him and Gordie Howe, the greatest players ever.''

Orr literally changed the way a blue liner played the game, and he did it well. In a career cut short by injuries, Orr collected 270 goals and 645 assists in 657 games (631 with BOS).

The Great One makes a great point on needing two trophies for defenders. The Norris has slowly turned into the award for the top-scoring defenseman, while the guys who pride their game on shutting down the opposition are constantly overlooked.

What are your thoughts on Gretzky's suggestion?
