The Boston Bruins revealed who they wanted to replace Jake DeBrusk with but ultimately he decided to re-sign with the Colorado Avalanche.

The Bruins knew going into free agency that more than likely Jake DeBrusk would not be back. During the end of year press conference Don Sweeney stated that the Boston Bruins took an 'aggressive approach' with DeBrusk in contract talks.

The day before the NHL Entry Draft, Don Sweeney spoke to the media and made it clear DeBrusk was not coming back, stating that there was no progress in contract talks between the Bruins and DeBrusk's team.

Sweeney on DeBrusk:

"I suspect that Jake will head to UFA and test the market. Remain consistent that we have been in negotiations with Jake haven't had any productive talks in quite some time.

"At end of the day, that's his prerogative to see what July 1 brings for him."

It was reported on July 1st that the Boston Bruins had a lot of interest in Jonathan Drouin, who was more than likely hitting the free agent market, along with the St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers.

Jonathan Drouin likely hitting the open market. Boston, St Louis and the NYR believed to be among the clubs most interested. Return to Colorado also possible.

Drouin would have been the perfect replacement for DeBrusk and would have been cheap as well, in 79 games with the Avalanche last year he put up 19 goals, 37 assists for 56 points.

Ultimately Drouin decided to re-sign with the Avalanche even though reports suggested he was going to hit the free agent market on a one-year $2.5 million deal.
