Sprong who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015, second round, 46th overall has played for multiple teams including the Penguins, Ducks, Capitals, Kraken and now the Detroit Red Wings. With an emerging Red Wings team, he played 76 games and scored eighteen goals, with 25 assists for 43 points and had 22 penalty minutes.
Standing at six foot 195 lbs, he would certainly give the Bruins some help in their middle 6 and could replace Jake Debrusk who signed a seven-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks two days ago.
Last season he had a one-year deal with the Red Wings and a value of $2,000,000. The Bruins still have over $8 million in cap space and could certainly accommodate at least the same amount of money he was making in Detroit. He would also give the Bruins secondary scoring which is a factor of their game that needs to improve.
After adding Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov, adding Sprong would certainly help bolster his middle and bottom 6 and come at a good price.
It's just a matter of Sweeney feeling that he is the right fit for the team.
