Insider confirms this Boston Bruins player will not be back next year
According to Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, the Boston Bruins will be moving on from defenseman Derek Forbort as he will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
The 32-year-old defenseman has been with the Bruins over the past three seasons. He is completing a $9 million contract and was viewed as a shutdown defenseman in the bottom pairing. He has struggled with injuries throughout his entire career and in 2023-2024, he only managed to play 35 games, had four assists was +8 and had 17 penalty minutes.
Head coach Jim Montgomery pencilled him in for a 17 minutes and 47 seconds of ice time on average which is a decent number considering where he sits on the depth chart. But the Bruins are preparing to move on has the team is moving into their evaluation phase to see who will remain and who will go.
The Bruins do not have their first three rounds of draft picks in this years entry draft which will likely mean general manager Don Sweeney will attempt to make trades to recoup a few picks.
Considering with his injuries, it's likely some NHL teams will be calling Forbort's agent to see if they can Inc him to at least a one-year deal. It remains to be seen on what the number would look like but it's likely less than $3,000,000 a year.
