In a surprising twist, the Toronto Maple Leafs are engaged in discussions with free-agent winger Patrick Kane as he contemplates his future in the NHL. Despite the Maple Leafs' lack of playoff success in the past decade, Kane is considering his options after initial interest from up to eight teams.

Insights from TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reveal that Kane, along with his agent Pat Brisson, has held meetings, including Zoom calls, with the Toronto Maple Leafs. As Kane moves closer to a decision, Brisson is expected to inform some teams that they are no longer in contention.

Originally anticipated early this week, Kane's decision might spill into the following week due to the complexities, particularly during the U.S. Thanksgiving week. Earlier reports indicated interest from teams such as the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, and Florida Panthers.

The 34-year-old winger is on the verge of returning after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery on June 1. The recovery timeline, estimated at four to six months, aligns with a conditioning routine video released by Brisson on September 27.

In the previous season, Kane played for both the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Rangers following a trade deadline move. Across 73 games with the two teams, he scored 21 goals and tallied 57 points. In the playoffs, Kane contributed one goal and six points in seven games as the Rangers were eliminated in the first round.

Drafted first overall by the Blackhawks in the 2007 draft, Kane played a crucial role in securing three Stanley Cups for the franchise (2010, 2013, and 2015), earning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2013. Kane boasts various individual awards, including the Hart, Art Ross, and Calder trophies, along with the Ted Lindsay Award.
