NHL Stars Get Banned from Gambling Commercials

A major announcement has sent ripples through the hockey world and beyond. In a significant move, both athletes and a few celebrities will no longer be allowed to feature in advertisements endorsing online gambling in Ontario.

Set to be implemented by the end of February 2024, the new regulations have been proposed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). Rick Westhead, Senior Correspondent for TSN, took to X to share this game-changing update.

For years, sports and gambling have walked hand in hand. If you've caught hockey on TV, commercials are an inevitable part of the viewing experience. And among those ads are plenty that promote gambling, luring folks to try their luck.

Well-known figures like Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, and the legendary Wayne Gretzky—all have played roles in recent online sports-betting promotions.

However, this change won't put an end to gambling companies churning out commercials; it'll solely restrict athletes from participating in them.
