Despite the Bruins' expressed desire to retain him, Bertuzzi opted for a one-year contract with the Maple Leafs worth $5.5 million, a departure from the multi-year deal he was reportedly seeking.

The decision comes after Bertuzzi's departure from the Detroit Red Wings at the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline, where he sought a longer contract that the Red Wings were unwilling to offer.


So, why did Bertuzzi choose Toronto? According to him, it was about both the team's winning potential and the chance to be closer to his family.

Bertuzzi explained. He also expressed his desire to experience playoff hockey once again, after getting a taste of it during his time in Boston.
