Failed trade involving the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers: NHL Insider believes the Oilers missed out
NHL insider suggests that the Edmonton Oilers have missed out on a massive acquisition following a failed trade with the Boston Bruins.
On Monday, August 25, NHL analyst Pierre McGuire appeared on Jeff Marek's Daily Faceoff podcast «The Sheet», where he revisited the contract standoff between the Boston Bruins and their starting netminder,
Jeremy Swayman, last summer.
This dispute dragged on all the way until there was just a few days before the regular season, where
Swayman would eventually sign an eight-year, $66 million contract.

However, NHL insider, Pierre McGuire, would suggest during the podcast that a serious trade offer from the Edmonton Oilers could have pried him loose and made him depart from Boston.
«Did they miss out on Swayman?» McGuire pondered. «The only reason I bring it up is I was living in Boston then. It was volatile beyond belief with what was going on with the goaltending situation there. And I just wonder if they didn't miss out on the potential of hitting a home run with Boston to solidify their goaltending position.»
McGuire continued by revealing that the Boston Bruins franchise is not fond of long protracted contract negotiations, and Marek agreed.
«When things go south, the Boston Bruins don't hesitate to pull the trigger on big deals,» Marek acknowledged.
Despite the possibility that this trade could have erupted and the Oilers may have had a better shot at the Stanley Cup, it is uncertain what Edmonton would have needed to give up to make this deal work.
