Carter Brooks of The Hockey News stated that over the past week the Bruins may be preparing to send Wheeler a professional tryout as the former New York Ranger is seeking a new contract.
The 38-year-old player was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes back in 2004 but elected not to sign with the team who was then dealt to the Bruins where he played for three seasons. Last year, he played for the New York Rangers and was only able to play 54 games as he suffered a major injury during the season.
He was able to put nine goals and 21 points together along with 23 penalty minutes.
The Rangers dressing room beloved him and with his leadership along with his experiences throughout the NHL, bringing him in on a PTO would be a shrewd move. Likely a player who would take the league minimum to stay with Bruins would be beneficial for their bottom 6 and secondary scoring.
Wheeler feels that he has game still left in the tank and with the Bruins seeking to improve their bottom 6 with potential veterans, a player like Wheeler would certainly fit the bill.
