The Boston Bruins and fans will sorely miss Jake DeBrusk as he signed long-term in Vancouver, for 7 years and $5.5 M AAV.
His first 465 games of his NHL career were spent in the Bruins system, scoring 138 goals and 128 assists. He'd help push them within a game of winning the Stanley Cup Finals in 2019.
He'd request a trade multiple times in Boston, while GM Don Sweeney wouldn't honor that request, nor did it seem like he considered DeBrusk's viewpoint.
If that isn't the case, Sweeney has been mum.
Regardless, DeBrusk's exit has caused some friction as DeBrusk wasn't happy with the Bruins prior to his departure in free agency.
«When it came out, it was very uncomfortable,» he said. «It was very uncomfortable going into the rink the next day and talk to the guys in the room. The guys that were there were the biggest reason why I got out of that situation, that side of things. They had my back; they were with me through it all and they were all good with me. They understood why in the room, they knew it was just me trying to find a better fit for my career to have a longer NHL career and a better chance at something.»
He wasn't in an ideal situation with the Bruins near the end and was afraid to have to deal with his teammates after his request was made public.
It sounds like Don Sweeney put him in an untenable situation and it's understandable why DeBrusk wouldn't be happy and seek to exit the organization as quickly as he did during NHL free agency.
DeBrusk will return to TD Garden in rival Canucks colors on November 26, 2024.
He'll certainly give a video tribute in his return, as he should.
