With the Boston Bruins' slow start to the season, to say the team is a finished product would be a lie. They sit at 5th in the Atlantic Division, with a 6-7-1 record, and need to improve significantly if they intend to make the playoffs.
There's speculation that the Bruins will look to add to the top six in the lineup. One of those players mentioned in trade rumors is Calgary Flames forward,
Andrei Kuzmenko.
The Flames would ask Don Sweeny to send center
Morgan Geekie in return for Andrei Kuzmenko, and Craig Conroy, and the Flames would retain $2.8 Million, of Kuzmenko's $5.5 Million cap hit.
Attached to Geekie would be Georgii Merkulov, and a 2026 second-round pick.
Kuzmenko could bring a scoring touch to the Bruins that has been missing lately. Kuzmenko could be used in multiple situations including the power-play, and find himself slotted on L1 or L2, with
Pavel Zacha, or
Charlie Coyle.
Moving Geekie would bring some cap relief to the Bruins, as he has a $4.0 Million cap hit, and bringing in Kuzmenko at $2.8 Million would be a significant savings.
Future Assets: The Flames acquire a young player in Geekie with NHL experience, a promising prospect in Merkulov, and a valuable draft pick.
Cap Relief: Shedding salary allows Calgary more flexibility as they potentially retool their roster.
The only precaution Don Sweeney needs to take is of course giving up too much for an unproven top-six winger. Kuzmenko has shown promise during his first season in Calgary,
In 2023-2024 he scored 22 goals and 46 points. He has the potential to do so much more, and perhaps being placed with Zacha, and Pastrnak could spark the true potential of Kuzmenko.
