Despite rumors of a shake-up in the Boston Bruins front office, according to Frank Seravalli, Cam Neely and Don Sweeney appear to be safe from the consequences of a failed season.
The Boston Bruins faithful shouldn't expect any meaningful change in the team's front office if what Frank Seravalli said is true.
Frank Seravalli mentioned today that Cam Neely and Don Sweeney are working diligently on the next version of the Bruins' lineup, instead of being fired.
For some fans, that is a relief; for others, this is just a miserable ride. One that gave us a 33-39-9 season and 8th in the Atlantic Division.
Let's not forget this season was the first in nine seasons where the Bruins would miss the NHL playoffs.
Under Sweeney's guidance, the Bruins have drafted and developed key players like defenseman Charlie McAvoy, chosen 14th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft, and goaltender Jeremy Swayman, a 2017 fourth-round selection. However, of the club's 22 selections in the past four drafts, only two players have graduated to the NHL roster in right winger Fabian Lysell and center Matthew Poitras.
While it seems incomprehensible that the Bruins have made it this far without firing Sweeney, he did sign and develop many of the team's core pieces today, including Charlie McAvoy, Jeremy Swayman, and David Pastrnak.
Instead of giving the team a refresh, the Bruins will march ahead with the status quo intact.
He can count two Atlantic Division titles to his name, and two Presidents' Trophies, but the Stanley Cup has eluded him every year.
This time it pains us to say, we're "running it back", like the perennial losers, the Maple Leafs.
