NHL players do not receive their normal salaries during the playoffs, instead their pay ends the moment they played their 82nd game.
The NHL uses a system that pays their players based on a 'playoff bonus pool'. This is a fund the league sets aside each year in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
All 16 teams in the playoffs receive money depending on how far they advance.
During the 2024-25 season, it was revealed that the total pool was around $23 million, that was split across all 16 teams based on the system in the CBA.
Marchand and the Panthers got a nice bonus
The payouts vary annually, but a recent picture made it clear what the players can expect to get after
winning the Stanley Cup:
For the Stanley Cup winning team, the total playoff bonus pool is approximately $3.75 million, which is divided among the players. The runners-up will receive around $2.25 million, with bonuses decreasing progressively for teams eliminated in earlier playoff rounds.
This may not seem like much for players that get paid big money, but for the players that are signed to league minimum deals, this is a nice boost for them.
It's not a big deal for the higher paid players in the league, but this is definitely a nice addition for players in the lower end of the pay scale, making it meaningful for them.
How much do the other teams make?
According to the NHL CBA, this is how the other bonuses are distributed to the other 15 NHL teams:
First round losers share a total pool of $2 million (about $250,000 per team across eight teams); Second round losers split another $2 million (roughly $500,000 per team among four teams); The two teams eliminated in the conference finals receive $1.25 million each, totaling $2.5 million.
