The hard cap has made it almost impossible to build a dynasty in today's NHL.
This past summer Gary Bettman announced that the cap would raise $1,000,000 to $82,500,000 for next year.
The salary cap was expected to be in the $90,000,000 range by the end of next season but couldn't due to the pandemic.
After the salary cap freeze since 2019, multiple teams were pushed into cap-strapped situations and were forced to move pieces.
Cap Friendly updated its salary cap numbers from this season to next, and it appears that some NHL teams are already over the cap ceiling for the 2022-23 season.
Here's the of teams from least to most cap space:
The back-to-back champs, Tampa Bay Lightning, are currently $1,973,333 over next year's cap, while the last-place Montreal Canadiens are also $171,309 over. The Vegas Golden Knights are likely to face a cap penalty as well, as they only have $200,000 in cap space. The Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers round out the list of teams with the least amount of cap space for next season. The Buffalo Sabres are on the opposite end of the cap, as they currently have $43,122,499 in space for next year.
