The Calgary Flames have traded former top draft pick, Sean Monahan, to a rival team in the Atlantic Division.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman was one of the first to break the news, of course:
''Sean Monahan is going to MON to make room for Kadri''
Clearly, this move is to make room for
Nazem Kadri, as the Flames send Monahan and his contract with one year remaining at $6,375,000 to the Montreal Canadiens.
Monahan was originally drafted sixth overall by the Flames in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. After nine seasons in Calgary, the Ontario native has appeared in 656 games and recorded 212 goals and 250 assists.
The 27-year-old was on a steady offensive climb throughout his first five seasons in the NHL, with a career year of 82 points in 2018-19. However, in two seasons and 115 games since, he's only managed 51 points in total.
A change of scenery might be the best-case scenario for the former high-end prospect!
Full trade is still pending.
