The Boston Bruins, mainly general manager Don Sweeney, are in hot water after signing free agent defenseman Mitchell Miller to a contract Friday morning.

Read more on the controversy behind it here.
Sweeney met with the media at 11 am EST today via Zoom to address the controversial signing, and he opened with this:
''I am not going to downplay that this has been a personal struggle as well as a professional struggle. Mitchell's paid a punishment, and he's going to continue to carry that for the rest of his life. We're going to hold him to a standard.''

Sweeney also noted that the Bruins weren't the only teams interested in Miller:
''If others were willing to give him a chance, we'd have to look in the mirror and ask why wouldn't we?''

He continued:
''Walking away would've been a much easier decision in this regard ... It invited a lot of negativity that we didn't need or want.''
Scott McLaughlin of WEEI stated:
Sweeney said Bruins players - at least the leadership group - were made aware that they were planning to sign Miller. Acknowledges that some asked, ''Why?''

When the core players that have carried this franchise for ten-plus years ask ''Why?''; that right there should be enough to walk away.
Everyone should believe in second chances, but when it comes to racism and/or ableism makes it much harder to look past. Yes, he was young, but 14 is old enough to know what racism is and to not mentally and physically abuse other people, especially the disabled.
The ''hockey stats'' will never justify something like this—another example of how hockey culture still hasn't changed.
