On this day 49 years ago, legendary defenseman Bobby Orr made NHL history for one of the many times he did during his career.
The day was November 15th, 1973, and the Boston Bruins were facing off against the New York Rangers in what turned out to be a blowout. Orr recorded three goals and four assists in a 10-2 win for the Bruins. That night, he set a record for the most points in one NHL game by a defenseman.
During 1973–74, Orr finished the season with 32 goals and 90 assists, leading the Bruins to another first-place finish in the regular season standings. Boston would make the Stanley Cup Final against the Flyers but lost the series in six games.
Orr's record would stand for four years until Tom Bladon of the Philadelphia Flyers registered four goals and four assists on December 11th, 1977, against the Cleveland Barons. Paul Coffey of the Edmonton Oilers tied Bladon's record with two goals and six assists against the Detroit Red Wings on March 14th, 1986.
