It's not everyday that you get to meet your heroes but that's the case for Derek Forbort, who just so happens to be named after a Bruins legend.

''Derek. Meet, Derek.''

Black and gold icon Derek Sanderson recently stopped by Warrior Ice Arena to visit the team he spent nine years apart of. One of the anticipated introductions was to his namesake, current defenseman Derek Forbort.

Forbort first shared that he was named after Sanderson when he signed as a free agent with Boston back in 2021.

''I actually was named after Derek Sanderson. He was my dad's favorite player. That was my first hockey card that I had in my room, was a Derek Sanderson card.''

Sanderson was one of the most polarizing figures in the NHL during his playing days, especially off the ice. However, he could bring it on the ice, as well.

In 389 career games for the Bruins, Sanderson recorded 135 goals and 159 assists for a total of 294 points. He also won the 1968 Calder Trophy at the age of 21 with 24 goals and 25 assists in 71 games.
