The Boston Bruins and GM Don Sweeney could have to face the possibility of moving on from Captain Brad Marchand. With the team facing an end to their eight-year playoff streak this season, they could retool the lineup if things go south.
The Boston Bruins started the season controversially, as they went through a fiasco with goalie
Jeremy Swayman, and agent Lewis Gross. The negotiations would take place in the public sphere, despite both parties' best practices to keep it civil.
Cam Neely, Don Sweeney, and Jim Montgomery would fall out resulting in the Coach being fired for having a dismal record in addition a to a terrible relationship in the front office.
With the team attempting to right the ship, they hired Joe Sacco who has since went 25-22-6, and are a point shy from making the playoffs.
The Bruins' situation is tumultuous at best, as NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman may have to deal with their Captain if they don't make the Stanley Cup playoffs this season.
Fast forward to Friday, when NHL insider Elliotte Friedman made a bold statement on his podcast "32 Thoughts" saying if the Bruins continue on a path towards not making the playoffs, that the team could look to deal their captain.
"If Boston takes on water I'm really gonna be curious to see where this goes because there was a time in this year where I didn't think there was a chance that Marchand was going to be out and I think now it's not as certain depending on what happens here," Friedman said.
Marchand will be a pending UFA at the end of the season and has yet to sign a deal with the Bruins.
With Friedman's recent statement, it appears the Bruins and Marchand could split soon, as they'll need to move talent like the Captain in order to retool the lineup.
He makes $6.125 million against the team's salary cap and could find himself as a suitable option for a Stanley Cup contender.
There's been no confirmation of interest for the Captain, but we could speculate where he could land.
He could prove to be a useful rental in the playoffs, as he's been a key piece in the lineup during both Bruins appearances in 2011 and 2019.
This season with the Bruins he's scored 40 points (19G, 21A) in 53 games.
