According to NHL Insider Rob Couch with contract extensions looming for the Panthers, Marchand may end up being a rental for the squad.

This is what we expected all along, they have Sam Bennett to worry about signing before Marchand could even come into play for GM Bill Zito.

The Panthers got Marchand at a discount, which is very helpful for a contending team.

They're typically up against the salary cap due to big acquisitions all the time, and Marchand was the latest forward who GM Bill Zito thought could deepen the ranks of one of the Atlantic Division's best teams.

After March 7th was said and done they have about $8 million cap space available. The majority of which could end up in Bennett's pocket.

Keep in mind the former Bruins Captain could find a bigger payday elsewhere, as he hasn't been able to find it in Boston.
