The sports world is mourning, as a prominent Boston sports figure has suddenly passed away yesterday, October 9, 2025.

Two-time All-Star outfielder, Mike Greenwell, of the Boston Red Sox has unfortunately passed away at the age of 62.
This Louisville native had been diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer in August of 2025, which ultimately led to this tragedy.
Mike Greenwell spent the entirety of his 12-year professional baseball career with the Boston Red Sox.
The Boston Red Sox, as well as the MLB, spoke on the tragic passing of the Hall of Famer on social media, via «X».
Take a look:
«We are deeply saddened by the passing of Red Sox Hall of Famer Mike Greenwell.

«The Gator» spent his entire career in a Red Sox uniform and was a beloved fixture of Fenway and Fort Myers. He gave so much to Lee County and Sox Nation.

We send our love to the Greenwell family.»
«We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Red Sox outfielder Mike Greenwell.

Greenwell debuted with Boston in 1985 and spent his entire 12-year career with the Red Sox. He helped lead Boston to the Postseason four times and made the American League All-Star team twice (1988-89).

A lifetime .303 hitter, Greenwell's finest season was 1988, when he batted .325 with a .946 OPS. His 22 home runs and 119 RBI were both career highs. Greenwell finished 2nd in AL MVP voting and helped lead the Red Sox to the AL East Division title.

He was 62 years old.»
Boston Bruins reporter, Joe Haggerty, also expressed his condolences.
«RIP Gator. Excellent left-handed hitter. A total adventure in left field. Was part of some solid Red Sox teams in the late 80's and early 90's that were really fun to watch even if they always seemed to fall short against the dominant Oakland A's teams in the playoffs»
Rest in peace Mike Greenwell.
