Trent Frederic's Future With The Boston Bruins Might've Just Been Confirmed By An Insider
The Boston Bruins have a major decision to make with forward Trent Frederic. GM Don Sweeney and the Bruins have to figure out whether they'll retool the lineup, or stay the course.
In order to retool the lineup, they'll have to move major pieces on the team who could fetch good assets in return.
One of those players who could fetch a great return will be forward Trent Frederic. Frederic plays a heavy, gritty game and has a scoring touch that contending teams in the NHL would love.
He's been in the Bruins lineup long-term since 2020-2021, and has worked his way up the lineup.
Under Head Coach Jim Montgomery he had a career year in 2023-2024, scoring 40 points (18 G, 22 A) in 82 games.
For now, it looks like they're still deciding if they will move on from Frederic.
«I think right now we've got to look at two paths,» Bruins president Cam Neely told reporters ahead of the Boston Bruins Foundation gala on Jan. 15.
«One that we're buying. One that we may be retooling a little bit. We still feel like we've got a playoff team here.
We certainly don't want to jeopardize getting out of the playoffs because we made some moves that may be good for the future but not good for the present.»
They could end up engaging in a retool if they miss the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
That all depends on how Joe Sacco and the Bruins respond in the latter half of the NHL season.
Frederic has unfortunately underperformed like the team has this year, scoring only 14 points (7 G, 7 A) in 51 games for the B's.
He could benefit from a fresh start on a contending team, and would be a great addition to their bottom-six.
Teams like the Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche could be in on him.
Back on Dec. 15, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Bruins were "getting a lot of calls" on Frederic.
That was about a month-and-a-half ago, and a lot can change in that time, but it shows how much interest Frederic could potentially draw if the Bruins did decide to make him available.
If the Bruins could get valuable draft pick(s) for Frederic, that should be explored.
However, the Bruins still could utilize his talent as a physical, scoring forward and re-sign him. A deal that could look similar to Vancouver's deal with Dakota Joshua who is making $3.25 million AAV.
The Bruins could receive the right assets to retool if they move him, but he's still reaching his prime and this season could simply be an anomaly for the gritty forward.
