The Toronto Maple Leafs want to make their defense stronger, and they made a big move on Sunday by signing defenseman Nicolas Mattinen.

Mattinen, who comes from Ottawa, Ontario, has been on the Maple Leafs' radar for a while.

He was picked by the team back in 2016, even though he was chosen in the 6th round, which usually means it's unlikely for a player to make it big. But Mattinen has worked hard to prove himself.

He's played in different leagues over the years, like the Ontario Hockey League and the American Hockey League. He's even played in Europe. Most recently, he played in Germany's DEL league for the Straubing Tigers.

We've signed defenceman Nicolas Mattinen to a one-year, two-way contract beginning in 2024-25

Last season, Mattinen did really well, scoring a total of 46 points in 52 regular-season games and helping his team in the playoffs too.

With this signing, the Maple Leafs hope Mattinen will add strength to their defense and help them win more games in the future.
