Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr has often been called the greatest defenseman of all time. Some people have gone as far as calling him the greatest of all time, period.
But for today's generation, it is hard to imagine just how great Orr truly was. A smooth skater with powerful strides, he revolutionized the position of defenseman thanks to his offensive prowess and puck-carrying skills.
To put it all into perspective, Orr played twelve NHL seasons, won the Norris Trophy eight consecutive(!) times, took home the Hart Trophy for three straight years and led the Bruins to Stanley Cup wins in 1970 and 1972. But perhaps the most impressive of Orr's feats is the fact that he remains the only defenseman in NHL history to have his name on the Art Ross Trophy after leading the league in points. And guess what? He did it twice!
Here is some old school footage showing Orr's dominance with the puck, his natural skating ability and lethal backhand shot.
Whether you think Bobby Orr is the greatest player, defenseman, skater or person in NHL history, the game tape simply does not lie - he was a force out there. If you're one of the rare ones that saw him play back in the day, consider yourself privileged!
