The sporting promotion is called Ice Wars International (IWI) and is headed by president AJ Galante. He and his family became famous after the Netflix documentary "Untold: Crimes and Penalties," about a son and his father, James Galante, who was a garbage mogul and served 12 months in prison for tax evasion, started a hockey team, the Danbury Trashers in the UHL (a now-defunct semi-pro hockey league).
The event is a 'spiritual successor' to Darryl Wolski's "Battle of the Hockey Enforcers" from 2006. The IWI held an event this past Saturday (May 21st) in Edmonton, Alberta.
Here are some facts about the IWI:
- It's comprised of professional and semi-professional fighters at the top of their game in top fighting condition
- they began this 4 series of events in the Spring of 2022
- All fights consist of two 1-minute rounds on ice
- KO or TKO ends the fight
- Judges score fights if needed (points system)
- UCF style gloves used
- Fighters drop actual hockey gloves to start the fight
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE!
