Patrice Bergeron signed a one-year,$2.5 million contract extension with the Bruins Monday morning, taking a team-friendly discount to stay in Boston for the 19th consecutive season.
One comment the captain made says a lot about the person and the athlete that Bergeron is:
''To me, hockey is all about the team's success and ultimately winning. That's what makes the difference between a good career and a great career.''
''I've made more money than I ever thought I would in hockey. Leaving a few [dollars] on the table to make sure you're a good team, and make sure you're a competitive team for years to come is what I've wanted to do. That's something that started here before me.''
A true captain is what Bergy is. He'd rather sacrifice his own salary to give his team a better chance to win.
It should be mentioned that Bergeron has been ''underpaid'' his entire career, as he's never made more than $6.8 million per season, even though he's been one of the best all-around players in the NHL for a long time.
Per the Athletic, Bergeron signed well below his market value, which was projected at $13.7 million
